On 14th September 2025, I had the privilege of photographing the clash between Portsmouth FC Women and Bristol City Women at the Robins High Performance Centre in Bristol. The match was played under relentless heavy rain, which not only tested the players’ resilience but also brought a unique challenge – and opportunity – for sports photography.
Capturing Football in the Rain
Shooting in poor weather is never easy. Constant rain means water on the lens, reduced visibility, and unpredictable lighting. But it also creates drama: droplets caught in the floodlights, players sliding into tackles, and soaked shirts clinging to the effort of 90 minutes. For a sports photographer, these are the moments that tell the story of the game beyond the scoreline.
I arrived at the High Performance Centre prepared for wet conditions: weather-sealed camera bodies, fast lenses, and protective covers for my gear. Despite the downpour, the atmosphere on the pitch was electric – with both Portsmouth and Bristol City battling hard in difficult conditions.
Why Weather Adds Character to Sports Photography
Rain transforms the game visually. Tackles become more dramatic, celebrations more emotional, and every movement kicks up spray that emphasises the intensity of women’s football at this level. As a photographer, my job is to translate that raw energy into images that capture not just the action, but also the mood of the day.
Some of my favourite shots came from sliding challenges and determined runs where water splashed up around the players. These images reflect the passion and grit of women’s football – qualities that shine through regardless of the weather.
The Growth of Women’s Football in England
Matches like Portsmouth FC Women vs Bristol City Women are part of the growing landscape of women’s football in England. With the Women’s Super League (WSL) setting high standards and grassroots support stronger than ever, photographing these games feels like documenting history in real time. Every frame contributes to showcasing the talent, dedication, and progress within the women’s game.
Sports Photography at the Robins High Performance Centre
The Robins High Performance Centre is one of the top training and match venues in the country. Its facilities make it a fantastic backdrop for photography, even on a rain-soaked day. The combination of professional surroundings and the intensity of the game provided the perfect setting to capture powerful football images.
Final Thoughts
Despite the challenging weather, photographing Portsmouth FC Women against Bristol City Women was an unforgettable experience. The heavy rain added drama and atmosphere that made the images stand out, highlighting the resilience of both teams and the spirit of the women’s game.
As a Bristol-based sports photographer, I specialise in capturing these moments – the passion, the grit, and the stories that unfold on the pitch, rain or shine.
