As a sports photographer, you learn to adapt to all kinds of conditions—be it unpredictable weather, challenging light, or the sheer speed of the game. Today in Bristol, I found myself navigating all three while covering an intense quarter-final clash between Bristol University Jewish Society and Oxford University Jewish Society football teams.
The match, part of a national competition, kicked off late at 4:30 PM—already setting up an interesting challenge for photography, with daylight quickly fading. The first half was played under the last remnants of natural light, making for some striking images as players battled for control in a tightly contested opening period. The misty air added an atmospheric quality to the shots, softening the background and giving the game a dramatic feel. However, as the second half began, the pitch was entirely dependent on artificial floodlights. This shift altered the atmosphere significantly, casting dramatic shadows and creating an entirely different visual feel to the match.
Despite the tough lighting conditions, I managed to capture the defining moments of the game. The energy and determination of both teams were evident, with tackles flying in and players pushing themselves to the limit. Bristol University’s team, backed by passionate supporters, managed to pull ahead and eventually secured victory, progressing to the semi-finals.
From a photographer’s perspective, these types of matches present a unique challenge. Adjusting camera settings to compensate for the changing light is crucial—higher ISO levels to maintain sharp images, faster shutter speeds to freeze the action, and careful positioning to avoid glare from the floodlights. Shooting in RAW format also helped ensure I could bring out details in post-processing.
Beyond the technical aspects, what stood out most was the camaraderie and spirit displayed by both teams. These university societies bring together students with shared backgrounds and a love for football, creating an electrifying atmosphere on the pitch.
As the final whistle blew and Bristol celebrated their hard-fought victory, I packed up my gear, knowing I had captured not just a game, but a moment in the journey of these passionate teams.
