As a Bristol-based sports photographer, I have the privilege of capturing some of the most intense and exciting rugby matches in the region. Recently, I had the opportunity to photograph the clash between Dings Crusaders RFC and Blackheath Rugby, the world's oldest rugby club, at Shaftesbury Park.
A Historic Encounter on a Modern Pitch
This thrilling fixture took place on the 4G pitch at Shaftesbury Park, Bristol, a ground well known for hosting high-level rugby. Blackheath, with their deep-rooted rugby history dating back to 1858, faced a determined Dings Crusaders side in a hard-fought contest as part of Round 23 of the English Rugby National League One.
The Conditions: A Photographer’s Perspective
The match was played under overcast skies, with a cool wind making conditions slightly challenging for both players and photographers alike. At 16 degrees Celsius, the temperature was comfortable for the teams but added a slight chill to the air—ideal for capturing the raw emotion and intensity of the game.
Game Recap: A Tale of Two Halves
The first half saw an evenly matched contest, with both teams struggling with handling errors. However, Blackheath capitalised on these mistakes more effectively, edging ahead with a half-time score of Dings 14 - 19 Blackheath.
In the second half, Blackheath extended their lead, taking further control of the game and converting their dominance into points. The final whistle saw Dings Crusaders 26, Blackheath 43, a result that reflected Blackheath’s ability to turn opportunities into tries.
Following this match, Dings Crusaders finished Round 23 in 10th place out of 14 teams, while Blackheath moved up to 5th place in the league standings.
Capturing the Essence of Rugby Photography
Photographing a match on a 4G pitch requires a keen eye for composition and timing. The artificial surface enhances the speed of play, meaning quick reactions and the right camera settings are crucial. Utilising my Nikon gear, I ensured that every image was sharp, well-exposed, and rich in detail.
The Importance of Sports Photography in Rugby
Sports photography isn't just about action shots; it’s about capturing the emotion, teamwork, and spirit of the game. Whether it's the determination on a forward's face as they charge into contact or the celebrations after a hard-fought try, these images help tell the story of the match beyond the final score.
